I live and in Baltimore and don't have too many backcountry ski options close by. That is what made my discovery of White Grass Ski Touring Center three years so great. Imagine a backcountry telemark skiing experience within 4 hours of baltimore, boasting an average snowfall of 160" annually. Yeah, you heard me right, 160" of snow in West Virginia! White Grass is family oriented and provides rentals and day passes for reasonalbe prices. They offer cross country skiis, telemark skiis and snowshoes for rent and provide lessons for those new to winter sports. Day passes are cheap and since White Grass borders Canaan Vallye State Park, Dolly Sods Wilderness, Blackwater Canyon State Park, and the Monongahela National Forest, your pass will gain you access to some hidden backcountry ski gems. My buddy and I like to take a winter camping / telemark ski trip into the Dolly Sods every winter. For those of you not comfortable ventuing outside of White Grass, enjoy the 45 groomed trails covering about 30 miles and telemark glades inbounds. If you are in the mood for some down hill skiing, the area has two ski resorts close by for your enjoyment, Timberline and Canaan Valley Ski Resort.
