With the recent concerns over drinking water contamination from hydraulic fracturing (fracking), I would highly suggest testing your well water if you live even remotely near a fracking site. Other sources of contamination like gas stations, junkyards, farms should also be of concern.
- If your well is near a hydro fracturing site, you should be testing for BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene)
- If your well is near a mine, test for heavy metals like iron and aluminum.
- If your well is located near a junkyard, landfill, factory, or dry cleaning operation, test for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals like cadmium, nickel, and lead.

Even if you don't live near a site listed above, you should still consider testing your well water for contamination. For more information on hydraulic fracturing, I highly recommend watching the documentary "Gasland".
